New PR with Weighted Chin Ups

The videos are a little shaky, but that's what happens when you let your 12-year old daughter film you. Only got two sets recorded - no idea what she was doing the other sets...but you get the idea. I'll post again when I break the 25 lb barrier!

First set - Body weight + 17.5 lbs - a new PR!

Only did 5, but that's ok with me!

Followed with 15 lbs x 5, 10 lbs x 5, BW x 6, and BW x 6!

Awesome job! Keep working at it! Every time you do it you will get stronger! I know, I used to only be able to do 2 reps at BW. Now I can do 5 at 35 lbs after 3 sets. Looking awesome at it though!

I know...as of late last year, I could barely do one chin up. I'm sure it doesn't hurt that I lost 12 lbs, but I'm so much stronger than I used to be. No way am I quitting now. I want to crank out reps with that big 35 hanging from my waist by the end of the summer!

Well keep at it and take the lower weighted sets at slower reps. Ease your way up and down to make sure you include each muscle in every rep. It may be crucial at first, but you will feel the "gains" after a week or two!

will do. thx for the tip. :)

Jenn. Awesome! Love seeing a woman do chin-ups. Weighted no less. I could be wrong, but from the videos, it looks to me that you're not going down to a fully stretched position between sets. I find that this helps me hit my lats more when I deadhang between sets. I can "feel" my lats engage better from the bottom position. Otherwise I feel like it's more arms.

Pretty awesome. I hope you keep up the amazing work. I don't agree though with one of your commentators saying that a deadhang would be beneficial. I would not take the risk to my shoulders.

Thanks Michael. I will take the advice beardedfitness gave and go more slowly though!
Damn, girl! You're my motivation to do chins. Every time I start to get discouraged, I am going to watch this :)
Jen, I feel so stupid. I was just informed that I have always had chin ups and pull ups confused. I swore up & down tonight that a chin up was overhanded. I looked it up and sure enough I was wrong! I think I might be able to do weighted chin ups. Yeah! I'm going to try on Friday.

Thank you for your motivation! I feel like we are fitness twins. I, too, am following lean gains. I am lifting heavier than I ever have and doing less reps. I used to weigh over 145lbs at 5'2" and now I am down to around 114lbs. Despite losing the weight, I still can't wear a bikini because I am "skinny-fat." I have decided that IF and lifting heavy is the only way to get me to where I want to be.

Totally supporting your fitness journey, it is so nice to know there are other women out there following this approach!!

Lift Like a Girl - You just might like it

After I sent Martin ( Leangains.com ) my chinup vids so he can post them, he asked me about my routine so he could offer some background to the videos. He felt it may help give some direction to other IFing women out there; and I hope it does. I think he's going to post this sometime soon as well, but I wanted to archive it on my own blog. I created this routine from bits and pieces found scattered like confetti across his blog. I know everyone is slightly different and has different goals, so this routine may not be for you. I also know that, after two months of this, I'm stronger than ever before, but will likely have to find a way to shake things up a bit to keep things moving...but I'm not sure how to proceed. In case you rush through the routine without reading the fine print, I generally rest from 3 to 5 minutes between every set. Since I'm only doing 2-3 types of exercises at 3-4 sets each, I'm in and out of the gym in under an hour. Oh, and I only workout 3 ...

Finally - Progress Pics

Recently I've been struggling with my motivation. I felt like I wasn't getting anywhere. My workouts stalled (poor diet, lack of discipline and no sleep). Then, today, I hopped on the scale to a solid 116.0 lbs (was literally 117.8 yesterday at the same time). I think the two pints of Guinness I had to celebrate St. Patty's with my girlfriend and the bar appetizers I shouldn't have eaten may have given me the "Whoosh" that Martin Berkhan speaks of. "By the way, a nice bonus after a night of drinking is that it effectively rids you of water retention. You may experience the "whoosh" effect, which I've talked about in my two-part series about water retention. That in itself can be motivating for folks who've been experiencing a plateau in their weight loss." In any event, I'm pleased at my results so far and look forward to seeing how I will look in another two months - just in time for Memorial Day at the Jersey Shore. Here the...

The F-Word

Fresh fruit will not make you fat. I don't know about you, but my favorite part of any food store is the produce department. I love the rainbow of colors, shapes and sizes on display. The playful misting of the lettuces, the exotic vegetables I've never heard of from parts of the world I've only read about. I can't imagine anyone getting fat by eating a variety of any combination of the foods you find here. So why do people think fruit will make them fat? It's the F-Word - Fructose Fructose, or fruit sugar, is a simple monosaccharide and one  of three dietary monosaccharides, along with glucose and galactose, that are absorbed directly into the bloodstream during digestion. Unlike glucose which can be immediately available to the muscles, however, fructose must first be processed in the liver, giving it the lowest glycemic index of all sugars. Naturally, fructose is fou nd in fruit, many plants and some vegetables, but not in very high concentrations....
